Acid: A Bold, Unapologetic Display Font
Where to Use Acid — and Where to Pause
- Large headlines (48px and up)
- Short phrases — taglines, quotes, event names
- Brand marks and monograms (especially uppercase-only treatments)
- Premium packaging accents — foil-stamped details, embossed debossing
- Social posts with minimal copy and strong visual framing
- Decorative accents in editorial layouts — drop caps, divider bars, chapter numbers
- Body text or long paragraphs — it’s a display font, not a workhorse
- Small print on product labels or legal disclaimers
- UI elements like buttons or form fields
- Anything requiring immediate, effortless readability under time pressure (e.g., event signage viewed while walking)
Designer Notes You’ll Actually Use
- Test it in pure black on pure white — then reverse it. Some display fonts lose character in inversion; Acid holds up, but check the counters in ‘e’, ‘a’, and ‘o’.
- Print a sample at 12pt, 18pt, and 24pt on your intended paper stock. Does the lowercase ‘g’ stay legible? Does the ‘S’ feel balanced?
- Drop it into real mockups — not just Photoshop layers, but printed proofs, phone screenshots, and physical packaging dummies. Context changes everything.
- Compare uppercase vs. lowercase usage. Acid’s uppercase has more authority; the lowercase feels slightly more approachable but less distinctive. Choose deliberately.
- Run pairing tests: set Acid beside a trusted serif font (e.g., Playfair Display), a neutral sans serif (e.g., Lato), a relaxed script font (e.g., Pacifico), a tight handwritten font (e.g., Quicksand Bold), and another display font (e.g., Baskerville Poster). Note where hierarchy feels natural — and where Acid gets lost or overpowers.
